Trash info for residents

As a resident of South Newton Township, you MUST choose from one of the options listed below regarding trash service. If you want to change your current trash service option, you must contact Kathi Ginnick at 717-532-9646.

If you choose to request an exemption, you must complete the form below and return to South Newton Township office along with a $10.00 application fee (cash or check is acceptable). Exemptions may be mailed to the township at: PO BOX 11, Walnut Bottom, PA 17266 or placed in the drop box which is located on the side of the township building near the salt bin.

If you are an existing or new resident of South Newton Township and need to sign up for trash service or change your type of service, please contact Kathi Ginnick at: 717-532-9646. Billing is done on a quarterly basis. Payments shall be mailed or dropped off to: Southampton Township at 200 Airport Road, Shippensburg, PA 17257. If you have a bulk item that needs picked up, you MUST contact Kathi Ginnick at Southampton Twp. so she can inform the hauler what you have for pick up and when.

Mandatory Participation – all residents/property owners are requested to participate in one of the four options below.

            Option #1 – Full service – Solid Waste Toter Cart, Recycle Toter Cart and one Bulk item per week.  Bulk item(s) must be scheduled with the Southampton Township, Cumberland County.  Cost of this service is $56.00 per quarter.  Senior Citizens (over the age of 65) will receive a $6.00 per quarter discount.   Bulk item(s) – shall include furniture items, and wheels (no tires), toilets, and carpets of a size no greater than 9’ X 12’.  A bulk item shall require no more than 2 persons to lift.  Excluded from the definition of bulk items are construction and demolition materials, refrigerators, freezers, microwaves, household electronics, and pianos.  Southampton Township, Cumberland County must be notified for bulk item pick-up.

Option #2 – Recycle Service – Recycle Toter ONLY, NO solid waste toter or bulk item pickup.  Cost of this service is $38.75 per quarter.  Recyclables – shall include:  Paper – Newspaper and inserts, magazines and catalogs, junk mail and envelopes, office paper, cereal, soda, and tissue boxes, as well as corrugated cardboard boxes and paper items shall be dry and clean and shall be loose (not in plastic bags).  Containers – Aluminum beverage cans, glass bottles and jars, metal food and beverage cans, plastic bottles and containers labeled #1 – #7.  Specifically excluded from the definition of “recyclables” are plastic bags, pizza boxes, takeout containers, cardboard with a wax coating, and Styrofoam.

Option #3 – Bag Only Service – Bags ONLY, NO other service.  Must buy a minimum of 12 bags per year.  Bags can ONLY be purchased at the Southampton Township, Cumberland County, Municipal Office, 200 Airport Road, Shippensburg, PA.  At a cost of $5.00 per bag, plus $1.00 per quarter fee.

Option #4 – Exemption to Trash Service – Each party requesting exemption must fill out a form for exemption.  The Board of Supervisors, will approve or deny each exemption on a case-by-case basis. There will be a one-time exemption application fee of $10.00 which must be accompanied with the application.  Exemption approvals will only be valid for the term of our contract (beginning July 1, 2021 for a 5-year period). Exemption form can be requested by contacting South Newton Township or from our website at: southnewtontownship.net.  Prior exemption status DOES NOT automatically carry over from old to new contract.  All exemption requests must be made to the South Newton Township.  South Newton Township will approve or deny the request on a case-by-case basis.  You will be informed in writing of the Board’s decision.

HOW TO HANDLE YOUR TRASH:

Items to Place in the Cart

Place all trash in plastic bags, if possible, and secure the bags to help prevent spillage and keep the container clean.  The maximum cart weight when full is 75 lbs. Lid should be able to close.

Prohibited trash includes:
  • Hot ashes or coals.
  • Hazardous waste (paints, oils, poisons, corrosives, batteries).
  • Concrete, rocks, large pieces of metal, tile, dirt
Best Tote Placement
  • Place your tote at the end off your driveway with the wheels facing the house on the evening prior to your scheduled pick-up day.
  • The handle of your container should point toward your house.(Arrows on the top of the container should point towards the street)
  • Place your container 5 ft away from all obstructions (cars, poles, recyclables, additional containers, etc…)
  • The container must be accessible to the automated collection truck and not be blocked by obstacles such as trees, parked cars, mailboxes, basketball hoops and poles, holiday arches and power lines. (Drivers will not move improperly placed containers.)
  • Bag your trash to prevent spills
  • Do not overfill your container
  • Make sure that the lid can be shut with ease
  • Household garbage should be put inside the township-provided container.
